"The Exorcist" and John Carpenter's "Halloween" aren't the only fright classics to get you in the mood for All Hallows' Eve. If you're feeling adventurous, check out one of the original horror films, the silent masterpiece "The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari," with live musical accompaniment and a film historian on hand to put it all in context. Composer Ben Model will improvise a spine-tingling score on the piano, while film preservationist Bruce Lawton will give some background and answer questions. Part of the German Expressionism movement, this 1920 film's impact on cinema has been immense, from Universal's monsters movies, to film noir, to the stylized Gothicism of Tim Burton. This rare edition features the original, beautifully illustrated German titles, which guest actor Ethan Watermeier will interpret. To complete your time travel experience, there will also be a spooky silent short preceding the feature.
